Why is olympic weightlifting so beneficial??
Olympic Weightlifting — the snatch and the clean & jerk — is one of the most powerful tools for developing total-body athleticism. Far beyond building strength, these lifts train speed, power, mobility, coordination, and confidence like no other form of training.
At Gnarly Fit, we believe Olympic Weightlifting is a cornerstone for athletes of all levels, from beginners to elite competitors. Here’s why:
🔑 Benefits for Athletes
-
Explosiveness & Power: Weightlifting teaches athletes how to generate force quickly — the same quality needed for sprinting, jumping, tackling, or starting fast out of the gate.
-
Strength & Stability: Every lift challenges the core, hips, and shoulders to work in sync, building strength that transfers directly to sport.
-
Mobility & Flexibility: The snatch and clean & jerk demand range of motion in the hips, shoulders, and ankles, helping athletes move better and reduce risk of injury.
-
Balance & Coordination: Olympic lifts train athletes to control their body under load, improving timing and precision for all sports.
-
Mental Focus & Confidence: Mastering technical lifts builds discipline, resilience, and belief in what’s possible.
Meet the Coach

Born in Kalamazoo, I played football & basketball at Mattawan High School and played football at Hope College from 1997-2001. I fell in love with strength training during the offseason. Eventually, I gravitated toward barbell training and specifically the sport of Olympic weightlifting in 2011. A few years later, I obtained a USAW L1 certificate and partnered with another trainer to open my very own weightlifting/sports performance gym called West Michigan Muscle.
We stressed the importance of power training and its carryover to sports and also improving functional strength for all ages. We ran after-school strength training classes at a few local high schools, and we also had a weightlifting club that competed and earned medals at both the national and international level.
